Great and versatile serveware!Sep 27, 2009 I recently purchased this 4-in-1 cake dome and have made good use of it! Its versatility is absolutely astonishing! On the two occasions I've brought it in front of guests, they've complimented it immensely. The first time, I served a variety of baked goods and chocolate fondue. The second time, I served a cake. A friend complimented that it looked very attractive and that I have "the nicest dishes". She actually referred to the fondue service and the cake dome, thinking they were two separate pieces until I told her about the 4-in-1 versatility of this item! The dome is VERY heavy, but it is due to the heavy duty lead-free durability of the item, so it's understandable.
The reason for the 4 stars:
As mentioned previously, it is VERY bulky and heavy. The seam link is quite visible on the dome and takes away from the attractiveness of the item.

Need to change shipping practicesSep 12, 2009 I ordered this item for a wedding present. When it came, it was packed in a box with a candy dish and a cake and serving knife. There was no bubble wrap or packing around the items. NOTHING!! Needless to say it was in a million pieces. I called and told Amazon what happened. They said they would ship another one right out. A couple days later I received the 2nd item by UPS. That on came intact BUT still didn't have any protection packaging around it. When I took it out of the box, there was a little chip on the base. This could have happened anywhere and was not neccessarily Amazon's doing. But it couldn't be used. Amazon was really sorry that this happened and referred me to one of their other dealers and so I ordered it directly from that company in Florida and got a cheaper price and guess what? It was packed in bubble wrap and alot of it!
Amazon has a lot of wonderful products but I don't get it. How can you send a glass bowl through the mail without any protection packaging? Doesn't seem right!

Pretty, practical, and best value for priceJul 27, 2009 I got this for $14.99 at Ross, so you may want to check there before purchasing it online. After looking for a covered cake pedestal online and in stores, I settled on this one because of a number of features I liked:
1) It converts to a punch or trifle bowl and chip and dip plate.
2) The pedestal foot, which serves as the dip bowl when inverted, is actually bowl-shaped. Many other similar items have a narrow flared tube for a foot, which, while aesthetically more pleasing as the pedestal, doesn't hold much dip and would be difficult to clean out.
3) The cake plate is flat, with a ring of glass beads around the rim to keep the dome in place. I prefer a plate without a rim so I can more easily slide things on with a pastry peel. A rimmed plate might keep the dome more securely in place while transporting... but a pedestal isn't a good thing to transport a cake in anyway.
Another reviewer commented on the inferior quality of the glass, and I agree, it's cheaply made, and on closer examination you can find seams and flaws. There are more beautiful - and pricier - pedestals out there. But if you're looking for the practicality of a 4-in-1, it's not going to be made of leaded crystal or even fine handblown glassware.
Beautiful Cake Plate with DomeApr 27, 2009 Luigi Bormioli Gallerie 4-in-1 Covered Plate with Dome
This cake plate is beautiful and sturdy. I purchased it as a gift for my brother-in-law and his fiance. I will use it to make their wedding cake and then it will be theirs to keep and use as a punch bowl, veggie tray or cake display! This is a very useful product and I especially like the size - it seems to be bigger around than other cake plates which was important to me. You get a lot for your money with this 4-in-1 cake plate! Highly recommended.
Packaging is not very good. Mar 27, 2009 Packaging is not very good. Had to have it resent to me due to broken glass. The second one turned out fine, but again due to the same packaging I feel I got lucky that it didn't break during transit.
